Today marks the halfway point of my first week at Oxford! It’s crazy to think how time has flown. Today was our last official International Criminal Law class, and we learned about the varying legal definitions of terms like ‘war crimes,’ ‘genocide’ and ‘crimes against humanity.’ It was interesting to see how these crimes are prosecuted as compared with domestic crimes in Australia, such as homicide and assault. Obviously crimes like genocide are the unimaginably horrific so it’s fitting that the international community prosecutes them in a harsher manner.

In the middle of our three-hour class, we have a fifteen-minute break which I used to find good coffee at Oxford. Being a Melbourne girl, coffee is crucial to get me through the day. I have tried a couple of places, but the best is actually closest to home (literally). There is a small café called The Terrace, which is located within Somerville College. I had a lovely chat with the woman working there and she promptly gave me a double shot vanilla latte (my favourite), which kept me alert for the rest of the class. Now I know where I’ll be going every day for the next week and a half.

Our essay for International Criminal Law is due in a few days and while I have a read the articles as references, I’m yet to make any significant headway on the essay. So the plan for this evening was to knuckle down and put pen to paper. But, this plan took a turn for the worse as a few of us in the group have decided to head out to a nearby pub for dinner.

Hopefully it won’t be a late one as tomorrow is a busy day. We’re heading to London at 8am to do some sightseeing and to visit one of the biggest insurance institutions in the UK, Lloyds of London.
